When you’re in the market for a new mattress, you take the time to learn about the advantages and disadvantages of the different types of mattresses, the materials from which they’re made, and how well they wear. When you spend a substantial amount of money on a mattress, you owe it to yourself to make an equally thoughtful decision about the cotton sheets you intend to put on the bed.

Don’t Be Misled By Thread Counts

Thread count refers to the number of combined woven threads (the horizontal or weft, and vertical, or warp) there are in every square inch of fabric. Manufacturers twist extra strands into the weft of the material when they want to advertise sheets as having a higher thread count. A higher thread count weakens the strength of the fabric and makes it more prone to pilling, rips, or snags. Look for sheets with a thread count of between 400 and 600 threads per square inch.

Egyptian Cotton and Pima (Supima Cotton)

The terms Egyptian and Supima refer to fabric that is made from combed or extra long staple Egyptian or American Supima cotton. Sheets that bear these designations are made from cotton fibers that are 50 percent longer than those of standard cotton sheets. The extra length provides greater strength, a softer feel, and exceptional durability (which means they’ll last longer.)

Percale vs. Sateen

Both Percale and Sateen sheets are made from long-staple cotton threads. The distinction between these two types of cotton fabric relates to how the threads are woven. Percale sheets use a looser weave. Percale has a crisper, matte finish. The sheets soften after each wash. Percale is a lightweight and breathable fabric that is ideal for people who get hot during the night. Sateen sheets use a tighter weave. The result is a sheet that is softer, shinier, and weightier.

Comfortable sheets are no less important than a comfortable mattress. You’ll get a better value for your money if you pay attention more attention to the type of cotton and the style of the weave. Thread count isn’t a gauge of quality. Count on Mealey’s Furniture for all your furniture needs.
